Pewter Cups

The first typology for cups is Lee (2009). Cups occur in 3 forms [types 1-3] and can be dated to 4th-5th century AD. Cups occur mostly in a band from Mendip to Cambridgeshire and equally on urban and rural sites.

Distribution
Cups are found in a belt running from Mendip to Cambridgeshire, the latter having an unusual density of cup finds. Northern examples are exclusively from military contexts. Cups appear to be common in both rural and urban settlements, but again the small sample size should be noted.

Forms
Eared pedestal cups [type 1, 198]. Conical cups with [type 2a] and without [type 2] a flanged lip. Stemmed cups with a semi-spherical bowl [type 3].

Chronology
Type 1 cups occur in 5th century AD contexts. Type 2 and 3 cups are dated to 4th-5th century AD contexts. However the sample of cups is small so these dates may not be representative.
